  • The Breath Collection is the first exploration of “I”. This work began with the question: if there is a true Self, what could this be? Continuing the line of enquiry within yoga, I arrived at Prana. Translated from sanskrit as life force or breath, I became interested in the idea of the breath being the most essential, purest form of self: the true Self. During the process of creating this collection, I came across the idea of ‘Atman’ (Sanskrit), which can be translated as essence or soul, but also as breath. This correlation between essence (or soul) and breath can be seen across languages, cultures and religions. ‘Neshama’ within Judaism and ‘Pneuma’ in Greek both take their roots from ‘breath’, as does the English word ‘Spirit’ (from the Latin ‘spiritus’ meaning ‘breath’). Within this context, the work really comes into its own. With eyes closed, each person appears hidden: the windows to the soul are shut. By photographing people behind the condensation of their own breath, a visual dichotomy is created: are the people within these portraits obscured or revealed? The photographs are displayed on bespoke frameless lightboxes, creating the illusion of suspension and in effect, illuminating the ‘self’. There are 17 pieces in The Breath Collection, borrowing from the structure of a Haiku – a poem typically containing 17 syllables (5-7-5). Some people maintain that a Haiku should be the length of a breath. This work was recently featured as a full page spread in The Independent. You can read the article here.
